I have a sadly and severly beaten '65 D-12-35 that was given new life as a 12-fret six-string with a 42-style top.

Also anyone really know how many BRW 35s were made in '69. My totals assume they were all BRW which obviously isn't true.

So, assuming even distribution, about 90% of the '69 D-35's would have been BRW. That might be a stretch, but it's the best guess I have, and certainly worth what I charge for guessing on the UMGF. I've often thought that the D-35, especially the maple bridgeplate models were underrated in the power department. I'm not generally a straight brace fan, as I feel it unnecessarily throttles the guitar. Just my opinion of course - many people like them just fine. However, the early D-35's seem to be a little more full (to my ear) than D-28's of the same period, without sacrificing volume. Later 1970's D-35's do seem to be more muted. FWIW, a friend of mine has a BRW D-35V (20th anniversary). They only made about 50 of those. It has a small maple bridge plate and is plenty powerful for a Sitka topped guitar. Now you've got me wanting an early D-35. My wife has a few words for you!!

Buck wrote:Most folks seem to be distracted by the three-piece backs on style-35 models and associate the rich and large and open sound of a D-35 with the three-piece back. The use of 00-sized 1/4" unscalloped top bracing is the real story, IMHO. Even the large rosewood plate ones have that sound in abundance. And, speaking of geting distracted, I need to post my D-35's... ...a trio of D-35S's (1968, 1969, and 1971)... ...and yes, the 1971 has a solid-headstock. Only paddlehead 12-fret D-35S I've seen. Also not sure what back/side wood it is - Morado? Pau Ferro? Light-colored highly-oxidized EIRW? And the xrays (actually "Henkograms"): The 1968 (small maple bridgeplate)... The 1969 (smaller rosewood bridgeplate)... ...and the 1971 (larger rosewood bridgeplate)...

Yours looks a bit prettier, Art. Is that the original finish or did you have it refined. Who did the work? I love that back. The insert makes it look like one
piece of wood.

Hey Tonguy: | ||

Just love those x-rays! I have a 1970 D-35 (so technically, I suppose I'm barred from posting here), but I got to thinking, you see. I never could fit my
head into the hole of my D-35 to see inside, despite my interest. Until now, that is! Sorta kinda... Thanks for those x-rays, Tonguy! What a kick!

Lee - Michael Lewis of Grass Valley, CA did the work. Got it back a month or so ago. The top appears to have been over sprayed at some point in it's
history. Michael refinished the neck at my request because some previous owner had stained it to cover up an old repaired headstock crack. Other than that
it's pretty much original. Looks and plays great now. Here's a better shot of the back taken before the restoration. That strap button has been
removed and plugged also.
