And all of these got me thinking or collecting in new directions, and taking up new instruments or styles. A sampling: Tschaikovsky's Symphony #5. I first heard it at age three. It started my life-long obsession with classical music. Mahler's Symphony #4. Put me into a ten year Mahler-thon. Made me enjoy classical vocal music for the first time. Thus, it made me love opera. Meet the Beatles. I didn't like rock and roll before this came out. From that point on, I was hooked. John Fahey, Requia. Defined my finger-picking guitar style. Eventually led to my current hobby of old-time fiddling. Lizst Sonata in B Minor, Andre Watts. Oh, to be able to play like that! Women would fall at my feet. Classical music as pure sex. I started playing piano. Never got as good as Andre, though. David Bowie, Aladdin Sane. For several years previously I'd been listening to sensitive folk music. Half a side of Aladdin Sane changed all that. Kind of Blue, Miles Davis. Jazz. A new way of thinking. Cool but dense with emotion. The Doors. First album. Angry. Exciting. Dangerous. Television. Marquee Moon. Still more angry. More exciting. More dangerous. Rock and roll as psycho-drama. Byrds. Mr. Tambourine Man. Rock can be beautiful. And has rock ever been more beautiful?

I didn't start playing guitar until I was 45 so my list isn't as much about what I am trying to do with the guitar (which isn't triggered as much by albums as by artists and individual songs) Some of the albums in my list, frankly, I haven't played much in over 20 years and view now as a bit juvenille. However, when I was young and accumulated albums and when I was learning about music (that had to be much different than my parents) and getting excited by the sounds, the rebellion, the volume, the ideas, etc , they were what came along and caught my ear. Let me put it this way, numerous of the albums I listed were present during key life moments (first love, first sex, parties, beer, drugs, etc.) and they are the albums that I wore out on my old turntables. I think that I was much more impressionable as to albums when young but also those records created a more viseral response that I can still plainly recall and that seemed to be more responsive to this thread. If the tread was about 25 songs or artists that changed my life, that might include songs that I have learned and the artists whose music is now more compelling to me. You made me think; I mentioned CSNY, but didn't mention all the groups they came from. Those guys were the rockers who brought great vocals along: The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield & the Hollies. Those are the guys I cut my rock singing on.... That group and their later groups have always gotten my attention and had a great influence of what I love. When I was in college and even worse on guitar that I am today, one of my dorm mates and I would play Bluebird for hours on end....good stuff. All things retro, Martin guitars, Rivendell bicycles, Converse Chuck Taylors.
