Why only pick on the banjo? |

So why are there only banjo jokes? Why not the mandolin? Mandolin players are smarter, better looking and have better hygiene than Banjo players?

I believe it probably has to do with the black face banjo players on into the early stringbands, where the banjo player had a very comedic role in a bands show. The "Stringbeans" and "Uncle Macon's" were very popular. Banjo players were thought to be the dopey, uneducated one and played into that stereotype for entertainment purposes. And..... All banjo tunes sound the same, sooo, that gives me a reason poke at them (semi-sarcastic)

I should add that my avatar is misleading - I don't play the banjo.

It's because banjos are too heavy to swing with any true accuracy. You can backhand with a mandolin easily and quick.

Yeah, but when they do land, they do some damage. Of course, just by being played they do considerable damage . . .

I believe the movie "Deliverance" may have perpetrated some banjo player stereotypes.

Here's a non-banjo joke from a one-time bagpiper.
When the Romans left Scotland, they left some bagpipes behind. They told the locals it was a farewell gift. The Scots still haven't gotten the joke. I wonder if droning instruments generate ridicule? |

He was a good guitar player but just for kicks bought a used set of bagpipes to mess around with. Coming back to his dorm room some time later he found someone had broken into his room and slashed the bagpipes. Not everyone is a fan I guess.

You might choose to listen, but often (and too often for some) you are forced to listen. So the jokes are part of an attempt to tame the instruments. Good luck. |

So why are there only banjo jokes? Why not the mandolin? Mandolin players are smarter, better looking and have better hygiene than Banjo players? Well, yeah. Answered your own question there. Next? I've never heard a joke about mandolin players, except from my picking buddy who says I'm ugly and not too bright. |

Hey OLDANDINTHEWAY, it's been over 12 hours since you started tuning your banjer. I'd bet it's still not in tune is it? Get some sleep--give
'er another shot in the morning....Ah, the plight of the banjer player.
