Mark Knopfler was a big hero of mine in my teens, and I've always wanted a National just like his. Problem is, the old ones I've ever seen listed weren't quite the same: they'd have the right headstock, chicken foot resonator cover, but not the etched sides. Or they'd have the etched sides and the later "paddle" headstock. I guess there was 30 second window in the 30s when they did Style Os exactly like Marks!
Anyway, in recent years National have reissued a 14 fretter which is pretty close to the one I've always dreamed of owning. The side etchings aren't quite the same, and the neck has a truss rod (with truss rod cover) but other than that it looks pretty good.
I'd be really interested to hear opinions of this guitar - how it compares to the originals etc. Being stuck down here in New Zealand I don't have access to old or new Nationals to tinker on.
I'd also be interested in recommendations of sellers who would be happy to ship internationally.
I know National offer custom options on their website. I wonder if they'd do a neck without a truss rod?? Or a "double palm" etching on the sides rather than the single palm pattern they do on the current one??
This is a real "bucket list" guitar for me. One day (maybe soon) it's gonna come my way.
