Anyone care to tell me what I should expect as far as sound from the '82 MC-28 I'll get this week. How does will it compare to a dread (say my '82
D-41) or to my 000-28EC? Anyone have experience with these? What does the oval sound hole do to sound? Thanks for any informed comments.

Wow Lee, that was a nice find. I looked for an MC-28 right before I custom ordered mine. I would think, depending on the bracing, it would sound like your EC
on steroids, but not as boomy as your 41. Congrats!

Am i right in thinking that Martin have started making this model again? Yes, hfs morgan, you are correct that Martin has recently added the M-36 (and the M-38) back to its standard series. And I like your idea of starting an M Owners Association. Alas, however, you have a short memory, as you seem to have forgotten the "M Squad" (so named after the 1957-1060 TV show starring Lee Marvin), which graced these pages back in late 2005-early 2006 and of which you were a member. Here's a list of M Squad members and their guitars, as of mid-January 2006. This list includes some who have already responded to this thread, some who have added to or subtracted from their collection, some who have. alas, dropped from the fold entirely (David515, we miss that wonderful M-40 Custom!), and probably some who no longer participate in the UMGF. I publish it merely for historical interest and do not vouch for its accuracy.
Here are glimpses of my two M's, a 1979 M-38 (modified with aftermarket fretboard inlay and an ebony bridge replacing the original rosewood) and a 2005 M-18 Custom:
Marshall P.S.: And by the way, dogaround, dreadnought owners are definitely not granted admittance to this association. Martin's M is the "antidreadnought," intended for guitarists who want a big and highly projective sound in a far more ergonomically sensible package than the dreadnought offers.

From Marshall's list above, I have dropped my MPFF and M-36, but added a custom M-42 to my two Arlo Limiteds.

What do you think?Be careful about removing the guard; if it's been on for a while you'll likely have a nice tan line apparent. -Lee

Although not asked, I'll add my $.02 and say that I think the guitar looks lovely without the guard. Evan's ('Madisonian's") custom M-38
is also "guardless," as pictured on the first page of this thread. I'm not a big fan of the guard that comes with this model and would probably
replace it if I owned one. Bill, I think the guitar would look great either way. It's a beauty; one of my favorite Martins of all time.

Hi Lee,
I'm assuming your comment is for others who are thinking about removing their pickguard, since mine has been off for 7 or 8 months now. My top does indeed have a faint tan line where the p.g. used to be, but it doesn't bother me... and I think it will eventually just go away altogether. Bill |

Bill,
What guitar is that in your avatar? It looks like a Yamaha pickguard, but I'm guessing that isn't what the guitar is. Thanks, Dave Kentucky Dave's Martins: 0-18 (1959); 00-28H (2006 Custom); 000-16R (1999 Special Edition);

Thanks, Marshall, for reminding us who was/is part of the M Squad!! My inventory has changed a little bit - at one point I was a third-degree member with my
wide necked (1-7/8" - oh, yeah!!) 1980 M-38, my SWM-GT, and my 2002 custom M-16-FGEB (full-gloss, ebony fingerboard and bridge). The SW-MGT has found
another home, and someday the same may be said of the custom M-16-FGEB. It never ceases to amaze me how versatile my M-38 is - it has the "big" sound
of a dread, and maintains its clarity and presence all the while. It covers strumming and fingerstyle duties with equal aplomb. It is a keeper.

If only I (i) lived in his neighborhood and (ii) had a left hand large enough to comfortably manage its ultra-wide fingerboard, I would ask to borrow it frequently Marshall |
