Herb and anyone else who knows, so what about a netbook |

are they worthwhile? I read the write up on the samsung and it looks good but pricey for what it is. Is linux the way to go over XP or whatever that windows is
(not vista)? The Asus can be had cheap write now as can the HP mini. Just want something for email and surfing when on the road or in another room away from my
desktop.
Thanks

Well, the netbooks can be awesome. The Linux versions are great, but please understand that Linux is *not* Windows, and is different, or you will be
dissapointed. If going with a Linux version, look at the Dell Mini9 with Ubuntu - the Asus uses a hacked up version of Xandros (a practically dead distro)
which is very crippled, and sucks badly. The Ubuntu Dell Mini9 (or Mini12 for something a little larger) is pretty awesome, and being Ubuntu gives you a nice
upgrade path to newer versions of Ubuntu as they come out every 6 months, not to mention access to nearly 20,000 packages and programs in the standard Ubuntu
repositories.
If you prefer to stay in the Windows world, any of the XP based models will be nice, although a little slow. Also, if you can wait, everything I've read says that Windows7 (the Vista successor in the wings) is going to be particularly awesome, and runs VERY well on Netbooks.

I picked up a used Dell that runs XP and it has been a real blessing. I bought a wireless router on Ebay for $20 and enjoy the mobility within the house or
while away from home. I plan on taking it with me on my upcoming trip. I do not know how I got by without one now that I have one. Linux is good, but I find
there is so much less trouble finding applications and getting around the learning curve with XP.

I am just reading about the MSI Wind, seems interesting too. I am a mac user so the microsoft OS is not an issue, I don't think. Either will probably do
nicely. This Wind looks interesting I will never buy anything Dell after my years with company Dell computers, I hate them

johnreid wrote:Yup, that is what I have heard. John, if my company did not load the thing up it might be ok, but I have such good luck with my macs that it is just the other end of the spectrum. So even going to a netbook brings a certain amount of anxiety of the microsoft operating system. My iPod touch is just too small to be really useful when traveling, it is ok but far from user friendly.

Newegg scam.....price alert, I asked for $250, they said yes, but really it was just $10 off, so $414. They must be nuts. I shall wait to see what the after
the holiday program brings.

That's surprising (maybe not shocking) coming from Newegg. That said, I think as long as you understand the limitations of any netbook when going in to buy
one you're going to be pleased. It's definitely not a gamer and doing large-scale modeling would be ridiculous. However, that said, I got my mother one
and she uses it for email, internet access, and the occasional letter. She couldn't be more pleased.

Just an FYI, Dell has improved greatly in recent years - I have 400+ Dell workstations running 24/7 at work, and I can't remember the last time I needed to
make a warranty call - Same goes for the 150+ Dell Servers (wish I could say the same for the IBM Notebooks, HP Servers, IBM Servers and Appro Servers I have).
Just some advise coming from an IT pro - in the realm of the Netbooks, I think the Dell Mini series is pretty much the cream of the crop - it actually looks and feels like a "real" notebook rather than a childs toy.

Also - you mentioned that you are a Mac user - I've read on some rumor sites that Apple *may* be planning a Netbook too - might wanna wait to see if that
pans out - it should be sweet :-)

I almost asked the same question a week ago. I decided it is worthwhile for me as a second computer when away from my home or office. I intend to use it most
of the time for work: email, client site data collection, projects on the road either remote access to my office computer or Word/Excel projects. It is also
small and light enough to take on vacations when I want internet and email or for the kids to watch a movie on a long road trip.
After researching all could find, I settled on the Samsung NC-10 (in black arriving in early January). With 6 cell battery (deciding factor), 160gb hard drive, 10" screen, bluetooth, XP and 2.8 lbs, it is small and light enough to carry in my briefcase or backpack without a lot of bulk. The reviews I could find via Google search and Amazon seemed to give this the highest ratings. I also decided I needed a portable USB DVD, CD player for loading software and maybe playing a movie ($45 on ebay). I also thought about a small laptop, but opted for this due to the size and the fact that my main home and work computers cover all of my needs except when I am away. I played wih a few other brands (HP, Acer, Lenovo) at Cosco and Circuit City and was surprised at how well they performed with fast boot up and internet access.

Mike - that Samsung has a 160GB Drive? That must be a traditional HDD - that would be an absolute deal-breaker for me - I'd want a smaller, but more
efficient Solid State drive in a Netbook - personal preference though.

My father in law just got an Asus eePC - very cute little 2.something pound box. Too small for me though. I'll take my new 15" MacBook Pro any day.
5.5 pounds, 320 gig drive, 4 gigs of RAM, a half-gig video card and it runs OS X.

I have my iMac and don't need a laptop for how I would use this thing, just when I travel or set up in the living room if I want to surf a bit or check on email, that would be it. The new as yet not arrived HP 1000 with Linux look interesting. I will wait to see what come. I did think of the macbook white, but I think if I did buy a macbook I would pony up and get the new aluminum brick model. I cannot argue that a laptop has a better feel to it, but I want small but not cramped.

Joel - when my kids go off to college in a few years, I've already determined that I'm gonna buy each of 'em an MacBook, unless one of them decides
to go into computer science or engineering, in which case I'll buy 'em the highest end MacBook Pro loaded out with the biggest drive and most memory
available.
Netbooks have a purpose as a handy little communications device but my iPhone fulfills that role for me very well already. My laptop is a fully-featured computer in a small package. |

Herb, I got my daughter a macbook which she loves. I hate my iPod touch for internet and email, too small for my hands, hard to read, etc....for travel I need
something bigger but not as big as a laptop for when I fly......I did look at the new macbooks and I am seriously tempted. They get a 10 on cool factor alone
and they are Macs.

If any of you guys buy MacBooks for your kids, do get the extended warranties. The kids will promise, and may even try, to take care of their machines. But if
yours are typical college kids, you'll be needing to replace something -- keyboard, power cord, the disk drive, battery, something -- after their Freshman
year. MacBooks are a bit "plasticky" I find. I take pretty good care of mine, and it rarely even leaves the den, but already the plastic housing is
starting to crack and
deteriorate. This is after only two years of use. Also keep some screen cleaner in the house to clean the screen when they come home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I guess they love to put their little Skittles smeared fingers on the screen when they point at their friends' pictures on facebook. Mine don't seem to notice until the screen gets really bad. I know, "let them clean it themselves," which I do, but I still have to hand them the spray bottle and cloth or it won't get done. I can't imagine going back to any windows based machine, Dell, Compaq, or otherwise, though I keep an old Compaq PC at the office for my beloved WordPerfect '98, which you cannot get for a Mac running OS X. |

Gee, I confess I forgot about parallels and had never even heard of WINE. Thanks. The WINE page indicates it's not ready to run on OS X yet, but I will
definitely try parallels.
I have hundreds of files written in Word Perfect that I'd sure like to be able to open and edit on a Mac. |
