Cycling is an activity that interests me. I don't own a road bike, but I do have a very nice older mountain bike. The roads in the rural where I live are not very "friendly" for biking, but I could forsee establishing a route around our small town. I used to run very early in the morning (4:30 am) - staying primarily within the town limits on well-lit streets. Not sure how/if I will be able do this on a bike (lights, safety, etc.).
For those of you who ride for fitness - I'd love to have some feedback about how you maintain a steady excercise heartrate, particularly in areas with abundant hills. How do you maintain a "workout" when you're going downhill? Also, I have seen devices that enable a bicycle to be used as a stationary bike - are these worthwhile (I'm thinking winter months)? I realize these are probably very basic questions for experienced cyclists, but it's all new to me. Thanks for your thoughts.
