Anyone have any experience with the Guild F series/size guitars. These seemt o be the closest in size and build to the Martin M size guitars. I am interested in a Tacoma built Guild F47M. Has anyone tried this model?

I haven't tried any of the Tacoma built Fs, but I used to have a 1974 F-50. After 30 years I had to sell it for two reasons - my arthritis no longer liked
the low profile neck and the guitar weighed a ton. It was the maple back and sides version. I got a D-18GE instead, which had the 1 3/4" mod-V neck shape
I now favor and weighed a lot less. You'll find that the M series is lighter, too.
I have since found that I prefer smaller guitars - 00s especially - so I sold the D-18GE. So, don't listen to me.

I had a J40 and a few F-series Guilds. As you know, the J has the same dimensions as the M except the J has Dread depth, and the M has 000 depth. Before
comparing to Guilds, here's a quickie rundown of the F-series for Guilds-

Thanks to both of you for the replies. How about the sound. Where do Guilds fit in the tonal spectrum compared to a Martin of similiar size/woods/shape?

Where do Guilds fit in the tonal spectrum compared to a Martin of similiar size/woods/shape? Again, I don't have experience with the new ones but my 74 F-50 had a broad, piano-like sound. Characterizations like this are subjective, but I can say that I would still be playing it if it hadn't become difficult for me to play. The Hoboken, NJ and Westerly, RI made Guilds were fine guitars.

I'd say the Guilds have a more midrange emphasis, quicker compressed decay with less overtones. More honk, less chime than a Martin, and not as
"bluesy" and percussive as a Gibson, but definitely has its own signature sound that is very pleasing. Todd played mine and described it as
"Archtop-like" and that's a pretty good description.

Just came from playing a Guild F-47R(rosewood), which I am considering buying.
Can speak to the dimensional comparison with the Martin M body: the current "Traditional Series" Guild F(F-40 and 47) body is very nearly the same as the Martin J and the Guild "Contemporary" F style(CV-1 and CV-2) nearly matches the Martin M(0000). The difference between the Guild F-40/47 and Martin J on the one hand, and the Guild CV-1/2 and Martin M on the other, is body depth: the former guitars are about 4 3/4 - 4 7/8" max depth and the latter, 4 - 4 1/8" in the case of the M, 4 3/8" in the CV-1/2. Also, the Guilds have slightly narrower waists and smaller upper bouts. The Guild that equates to the Martin 000 would be the F-30, though the latter is deeper-bodied. Sound-wise, you just have to try them: there are differences in signature tone as well as guitar-to-guitar differences. |

I never considered the Guild CV models. I guess because of the cutaways. Looks worth checking out. Thanks

Here is my old JF-30:
Here is my new F-112:
The F-112 will be ready early next week. It is all solid wood and much, much lighter then its arched back, laminated would cousin seen in the top photo. The JF-30 was would literally give me a sore back when I had to stand and play for a few hours. Way to heavy imho. I must admit that the sound was great on the -30 but it was redundant to my then owned D-35. The new laminated Guilds are built like tanks and way as much as well.

I've been known to play with the following: D-18 : D-18V : Backpacker : 000-28EC : D-41 : Breedlove OM-M : Gibson C-0 Classic : Martin D12-1 : and a '98 Harley-Davidson FLTR Road Glide ************* Hand me my old guitar, pass the whisky round. Won't you tell everybody you meet that the Candyman's in town. -Hunter/Garcia |
