What's your best junk shop/cheapo guitar find ?
I suppose like most of us I could never resist looking around junk shops in the vague hope of finding that elusive dusty gem, akin to the story about Dave Rawlings' Epiphone. Well the internet has sadly killed off most of the junk shops round here at least for guitars and instruments so I occasionally trawl ebay to see what's going. My previous best find was a Vega banjo with a headstock break which was an easy fix but that's long ago sold. A few weeks ago I did find a guitar which is a serious contender for my best ever. It's a Giannini Model 6. It cost me less than the price of a set of Titanium strings including shipping and it arrived in a bed sized box packed to the rim with polybeads ( which will fill 2 bean bags). I unpacked it and thought " Oh dear" . It looked like it had been sitting on top of a chip shop fryer for years and then rolled in a dog bed. When I started cleaning it I could see that the lacquer was so crazed thatyou couldn't get a fingertip between the cracks. And it has a horrible yellow haze. So after a couple of hours I'm through the grime, tuners come off and sit in WD40 and It reveals an all solid guitar, mahogany b& s, mahogany braces, could be a brazillian rosewood fingerboard. I set to getting it set up. À new bone nut from my bits box fitted nicely, the saddle needed a bit of work and on went some old strings. Action is fine and it stays in tune, all good so far. A bit of dressing to the brass frets and on went some new strings, so I sat down to play it in for an hour , left it and went to bed. Next morning I forgot about it but eventually picked it up, tweaked the tuning and WOW! I've been playing this sweetie every day since. So What's your best find? Mick
