Greetings, Trying to sort through the best way to learn songs by Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Now I could listen to each and every one - try to transcribe it .... however I am looking for a jump start. Caught this program last night; apparently it first aired in January but I just caught it on the DVR last night in HD from our local PBS affiliate. What a great showman. He's not a flashy player but he's fun and still has a fantastic voice. As has been said many times, he gets more feeling out of fewer actual notes than nearly anyone.

A few months ago we got this channel on DirectTV, they play a lot of concerts and plays and have tons of documentaries on various artists.

I was flipping though and they had a documentary on Howlin' Wolf (Chester Arthur Burnett) that was great! Lots of his music and a recorded works along with interviews with friends and relatives.

I just picked up Freddie King's Live at the Electric Ballroom (1974). I've been a fan of his electric blues for a while, but I hadn't heard any acoustic blues from him until today. His live version of Jimmie Rodgers' That's Alright is excellent. I don't know what he's playing, but I would guess it's a Gibson jumbo, maybe a J-200. The guitar sounds amazing. I recently purchased from Homespun "The Blues Guitar of Brownie Mcghee". I thought it was interesting - and gracious - that at the end of the lesson Happy Truam recommended folks pick up a VESTAPOL (by Stefan Grossman) video of Brownie performances.

I may be sappy, but I like seeing folks getting along.

Jack was at one time the lead guitarist in the Allman bros. Band but today is doing mostly solo stuff of his own writing. Enjoy-Jack,(IMO) is the Man!!

Born in Mississippi in 1896, he grew up on a farm not far from Memphis, TN. He started his career playing jugband music, playing shows with Memphis Minnie, Furry Lewis and Son House. He then moved on to playing blues. Said to have influenced Muddy Waters, this guitarist/singer gave up blues and secular music after a party he was playing at turned violent. The Rolling Stones had a hit recording of a song he wrote, for which the band later was hauled into court and forced to pay royalties....
